Carthen Earns Doctorate
Lorie Carthen earns a Doctorate in Nursing Practice (DNP) degree from East Carolina University in Greenville, NC. Carthen completed her BSN and MSN from Winston-Salem State University, Winston-Salem, NC. Carthen pursued her higher education degree to continue to improve the quality of care given to patients. Her dissertation is entitled: Implementing Obesity Clinical Guidelines in Primary Care.
Carthen’s research found a gap in the way primary care providers screen and treat obesity. She designed a process of improvement to address under diagnosing and treatment of obesity in primary care. The purpose of the project was to increase provider adherence to the national obesity guides.
Additionally, the project created a practice change within the clinic’s screening and managing of obesity. Moving forward, Carthen’s project helps to impact research by serving as part of the solution in the obesity epidemic within the U.S. As an additive to her success, Carolinas Healthcare System will implement this project at other Family Practice/Internal Medicine Practice sites as a practice change. She also has the opportunity for her research to be published in a peer reviewed healthcare journal.
Congratulations to Lorie Carthen on your outstanding educational accomplishment. Her doctoral degree (DNP) will be conferred upon her in December 2016.
